Where's My Refund?

Updated: Feb 24, 2021

Checking the IRS annual tax refund status is very simple and easy. First of all, there are two ways to report annual taxes. One way is to submit it to the IRS system through the federal government website called e-filing. The other one is called paper filing, wherein you have to send the original documents to the appropriate address.

The official IRS website provides a menu to check the refund status only for e-filing of the most recent year. If you go to www.irs.gov, you can find the "Check My Refund Status" at the upper left corner. If you check the menu, there is a blue box with the same name. Click it. You need to fill out the SSN, Filing Status, and the Refund Amount from Form 1040. Once done, click the submit button. If all the information you have entered is correct, the next page will display the taxpayer's refund status.

If the status is not displayed on the next page and your information is incorrect or does not exist on the IRS system, you must call the IRS call center at 800-829-4933. The IRS agent only shares your status after verifying your personal information such as full name, SSN, DOB, etc. Please note that an IRS official may suspend the call due to fraudulent inquiries especially if your response doesn't match with the IRS system.
